A New Year, A New Beginning
Ankit Jain had the honor of being the first guest of 2024 on a Community Podcast. He began by sharing a little about himself—his upbringing, professional background, and his family’s journey to the U.S. Born near San Francisco, Ankit moved to Fairfax, Virginia, at just nine months old and has called the D.C. area home for most of his life. His parents immigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s, seeking better opportunities, and Ankit’s journey has been deeply shaped by their experiences.
Ankit Jain’s Professional Journey
A lawyer by profession, Ankit currently works with FairVote, a leading organization advocating for ranked-choice voting. Before this, he was associated with the Sierra Club, an environmental organization. His passion for political reform has been a driving force in his career, leading him to become a key advocate for democracy and electoral reform.
Having lived in Washington, D.C., Ankit is deeply aware of the challenges its residents face due to the lack of statehood. Unlike other U.S. citizens, D.C. residents do not have voting representation in Congress, a disparity that Ankit has actively worked to address.
What is a D.C. Shadow Senator?
Ankit’s commitment to the cause of D.C. statehood led him to run for the position of shadow senator, an elected role dedicated to advocating for D.C.’s full representation in Congress. While shadow senators do not have voting power, they serve as the voice of D.C. residents, lobbying Congress and organizing statehood campaigns. The position is instrumental in pushing for legislative changes that would grant D.C. equal rights within the United States.
The Immigration Story: A Tale of Resilience
Ankit’s parents came to the U.S. with little knowledge of what to expect. His father, originally from Uttar Pradesh, moved to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in statistics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Meanwhile, his mother migrated through family sponsorship, a process often referred to as ‘chain migration.’
One of the most amusing anecdotes Ankit shared was about his father’s belief, prior to arriving in the U.S., that the country had Coca-Cola fountains instead of water fountains. This innocent misconception highlights how little exposure and understanding immigrants often have before moving to a new country.
Despite initial uncertainties, Ankit’s parents built a life in the U.S. His mother’s relatives encouraged her to stay, and she eventually met Ankit’s father through the matrimonial section of India Abroad, a newspaper that facilitated arranged marriages within the Indian-American community. What began as a temporary move soon became permanent, with Ankit’s parents deciding to settle in the U.S. and raise their family in Virginia.
Challenges and Successes
While his father initially intended to complete his Ph.D. and return to India, his growing passion for bridge (a popular card game) and sports betting led to academic setbacks. Unable to complete his dissertation, he salvaged his academic career by earning a master’s degree instead. He later found work in California, which cemented his decision to stay in the U.S.
Ankit’s story is a testament to the unpredictability of life and how opportunities shape our paths. His father’s journey from a Ph.D. student to a professional in California, combined with his mother’s adaptation to a new country, exemplifies the resilience of immigrants who navigate unfamiliar landscapes to build a better future.
Fighting for D.C. Statehood
Ankit’s current role as a shadow senator is crucial in the ongoing battle for D.C.’s rights. As the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., is unique in that it lacks voting representation in Congress. Congress has the power to overturn local D.C. laws, limiting the city’s autonomy. The role of the shadow senator is to fight for these rights by lobbying lawmakers and rallying public support.
Ankit hopes to bring new energy and strategy to this fight, ensuring that Washington, D.C., finally gains the representation it deserves. His legal background, coupled with his deep understanding of democracy reform, positions him as a formidable advocate for this cause.
Conclusion
Ankit Jain’s journey—from being the son of Indian immigrants to becoming a democracy reform advocate—is a powerful story of perseverance and purpose. His fight for D.C. statehood is not just about politics; it is about ensuring that every American has a voice. As he continues his work as a shadow senator, his story serves as an inspiration for those who believe in equality, representation, and the democratic process.
Ankit’s efforts remind us that change is possible when driven by passion and determination. As Washington, D.C., continues its pursuit of statehood, leaders like Ankit are at the forefront, striving to make history and secure the democratic rights of all its residents.
