Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed worries about the increasing demographic challenge posed by Bangladesh-origin Muslims in Assam. Speaking at the Republic Day event in Dibrugarh, he emphasized the need to address unchecked migration to protect the identity of indigenous Assamese communities.
Sarma highlighted concerns about the potential rise in the population of ‘Miya’ Muslims to almost 40% in the upcoming 2027 census. He cautioned that such a demographic shift could have significant long-term consequences for the state, urging for heightened awareness and vigilance.
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining demographic balance and safeguarding indigenous rights, the Chief Minister stressed the necessity of prioritizing these issues for the state’s future stability. Sarma also outlined various ambitious projects aimed at transforming Assam, including enhancing connectivity across the Brahmaputra and introducing innovative initiatives like bamboo-based oil production and IT chip manufacturing within the state.
