Bengaluru Airport Unveils India’s Largest Domestic Cargo Terminal

Bengaluru has taken a giant leap in the logistics sector with the launch of India’s largest domestic cargo terminal at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). This newly built facility, spread across 7 acres and covering 245,000 square feet, is designed to revolutionize cargo handling in the country. With an impressive capacity and state-of-the-art technology, the terminal is set to strengthen India’s growing air freight industry.

Boosting Cargo Handling Capacity

The terminal has an annual handling capacity of 360,000 metric tonnes, which can be expanded to 400,000 metric tonnes. This enhanced capacity is backed by a robust infrastructure featuring 42 truck docks, over 400 cargo bins, high-speed conveyors, and automated X-ray screening systems. Additionally, the terminal is equipped with more than 30 build-up and breakdown stations, ensuring a smooth flow of cargo with minimal delays.

Advanced Technology for Efficiency

One of the standout features of this terminal is its integration of modern technology. Equipped with real-time tracking systems and digital analytics, the facility enhances transparency in cargo movements. Self-service kiosks and handheld terminals further streamline operations, allowing cargo handlers and agents to process shipments with speed and accuracy. The implementation of these technologies significantly reduces turnaround time, benefiting businesses and consumers alike.

Meeting Diverse Cargo Needs

Bengaluru Airport is a key hub for transporting perishable goods and is already the country’s largest exporter of items like mangoes and coriander. This new terminal expands its capabilities with dedicated sections for handling high-value cargo, fragile items, live animals, hazardous materials, and radioactive goods. These specialized storage zones ensure that a wide variety of shipments are managed efficiently and securely.

Strengthening India’s Supply Chain

With over 100 domestic and international connections, Bengaluru Airport plays a crucial role in India’s supply chain network. Currently, it facilitates around 13% of the country’s total air cargo and handles 40% of South India’s air freight. In 2024 alone, the airport processed a record-breaking 496,227 metric tonnes of cargo, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. The projections for 2025 indicate even greater growth, with cargo volumes expected to surpass 500,000 metric tonnes.

Eco-Friendly and Future-Ready Infrastructure

The terminal has been developed with sustainability in mind. Built to meet green building standards, it incorporates eco-friendly practices, making it an environmentally responsible facility. With an investment of ₹120 crore, the project has been designed to not only meet current demands but also accommodate future expansions as air cargo volumes continue to rise.
