Vivek Menon, a prominent conservationist and founder of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), has achieved a significant milestone by being named a recipient of the ‘Freedom of the City of London’ award. This prestigious recognition was bestowed upon Menon on July 19 by Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli, highlighting his exceptional contributions to nature conservation.

The Freedom of the City of London, a distinguished honor dating back to the 13th century, is presented by the City of London Corporation. It celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public life or achieved remarkable accomplishments. Menon’s inclusion marks him as the first Indian conservationist to receive this accolade.

Menon, who established WTI in 1998, has been a key figure in wildlife conservation, focusing on endangered species and threatened habitats. His work, which includes roles with the Linnaean Society, IUCN, and the Amphibian Survival Alliance, showcases his commitment to environmental issues on a global scale. He has also contributed to literature with several influential books and numerous articles.

The Freedom of the City of London has been awarded to various notable figures, including Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, UK Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, and other distinguished individuals such as Bill Gates and Ed Sheeran. Menon’s achievement places him among these renowned recipients.
