The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been awarded the ‘Global Water Tech Award 2024’ in the ‘organization’ category for its outstanding environmental initiatives. This prestigious award, presented by the Global Energy and Environment Foundation (GEEF), recognizes DMRC’s significant contributions to water conservation and efficient water resource management across Delhi.

DMRC’s key initiatives include the installation of rainwater harvesting pits, sewage treatment plants, and the use of treated effluent for construction, horticulture, and dust suppression. The corporation has also implemented water-efficient fixtures, Beton Wash facilities at construction sites, and dual plumbing systems, ensuring the efficient use of “dewatered water” from its construction sites.

Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, stated, “This award highlights DMRC’s role as a leader in the sustainable utilization and conservation of vital natural resources, setting a benchmark for other organizations.” DMRC’s efforts have been acknowledged as setting a standard for sustainable practices in the industry.

During its first phase of construction, DMRC rejuvenated the dry Sarpakar Lake near Delhi University using “dewatered water” from its construction site. Currently, the dewatered water from Phase-IV construction is being used to rejuvenate Roshanara Bagh Lake, with over a kilometer of pipeline laid to facilitate this. Additionally, treated water from sewage treatment plants meets the horticultural needs at DMRC premises, including staff quarters, depots, and Metro Bhawan.
