Confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda have surpassed 600, with a death toll of 102, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Uganda has reported 19 cumulative cases, with no new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, while the DRC recorded 45 new confirmed cases in Ituri Province.
The outbreak is mainly concentrated in Ituri Province in eastern DRC, accounting for over 94% of the country’s total caseload. Response efforts are facing operational challenges, including poor health facilities, lack of essential supplies, insecurity, and staffing issues, hampering access and response operations.
The Africa CDC highlighted the urgent need to strengthen community engagement, enhance surveillance, and address gaps in infection prevention and safe burial practices. Travel restrictions on affected African countries were also a concern, despite guidance from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Africa CDC.
