Swaminathan’s academic and professional trajectory is both diverse and inspiring. Beginning with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, she transitioned to an MBA and later pursued a Master in Public Policy. During her MBA studies, she was profoundly influenced by a close friend working in poverty alleviation in remote parts of India. This inspiration led her to undertake research projects with organizations and consult with various state governments on agriculture and sanitation initiatives.

A pivotal moment in her career was her involvement with a social enterprise in Hyderabad, where she mobilized over 1,000 waste pickers and 10,000 households into composting and recycling solutions. However, she observed that female employees often requested to leave work by 5 PM to return home before their husbands, aiming to avoid domestic violence. This experience deeply moved her and solidified her commitment to addressing gender-based violence (GbV).

The Birth of Parity Lab

Determined to make a global impact, Swaminathan pursued a fully funded Master’s program in the U.S. with a focus on gender studies. She was honored with a prestigious award by Harvard University for her work on eliminating gender bias in organizations. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the shadow pandemic of domestic violence, compelling her to act. This urgency led to the creation of Parity Lab, with a mission to end GbV within a generation.
