Fiji Launches Tamil Language Program to Preserve Cultural Heritage
Fiji has initiated a Tamil Teaching Program to preserve the Tamil language and strengthen ties with India. This initiative, launched at the 93rd TISI Sangam Convention in Lautoka, reflects a commitment to sustaining the Tamil community’s rich heritage in Fiji. With support from India’s government and Fiji’s Ministry of Education, two Tamil educators from India will teach at Sangam schools, ensuring the younger generation connects with their linguistic and cultural roots.
The program underscores the historical ties between India and Fiji, dating back to the 19th century when indentured Tamil laborers were brought to Fiji during British colonial rule. Today, the Tamil community remains a vibrant part of Fiji’s multicultural society. The initiative seeks to bridge generational gaps and preserve Tamil traditions, even thousands of miles from their origin.
The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, P.S. Karthigeyan, emphasized the program’s significance, highlighting its role in cultural collaboration and continuity. The initiative is part of a broader effort to celebrate diversity while fostering global connections, ensuring the Tamil language thrives for generations to come.
This milestone represents a renewed focus on preserving cultural identities and enhancing Indo-Fijian relations, reaffirming the value of linguistic and cultural education in fostering unity.
