Gill’s Unbeaten Century and Shami’s Five-For Propel India to Victory Over Bangladesh

A Dominant Bowling Display
India kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a commanding six-wicket victory over Bangladesh. Choosing to bat first, Bangladesh struggled against India’s fiery pace attack. Mohammed Shami led the charge with a sensational spell of 5-53, dismantling the opposition’s top order early.
At 35-5 within the first nine overs, Bangladesh found themselves in deep trouble. Debutant Harshit Rana impressed with figures of 3-31, while spinner Axar Patel nearly claimed a hat-trick, tightening India’s control over the game.
Hridoy’s Resilient Century
Despite the early collapse, Towhid Hridoy displayed remarkable resilience, playing a lone warrior’s role for Bangladesh. Battling through cramps and relentless pressure, he reached a hard-fought century, scoring 100 runs off 112 balls.
Partnering with Jaker Ali, who contributed 68 runs, Hridoy helped Bangladesh recover with a crucial 154-run stand for the sixth wicket. Their efforts ensured Bangladesh reached a respectable total of 228 before being bowled out with just two balls remaining in the innings.
India’s Calculated Chase
Chasing 229, India started confidently with a solid 69-run opening stand between skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit, scoring 41 runs, reached a milestone of surpassing 11,000 ODI runs before falling in the 10th over.
Bangladesh spinners struck back, removing Virat Kohli (22), Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel in quick succession, briefly putting India under pressure. However, Gill anchored the chase masterfully, remaining unbeaten on 101. KL Rahul provided solid support with 41 not out, guiding India to victory with 21 balls to spare. Rahul sealed the win in style, smashing a six to finish the game.
Looking Ahead
This victory gives India a strong start to their tournament campaign. Up next, they face defending champions Pakistan in what promises to be a high-intensity clash in Dubai. With momentum on their side, India will look to continue their winning streak and edge closer to the knockout stages.
