Hygenco, in collaboration with Ameropa, has embarked on a strategic partnership aimed at significantly increasing India’s production and export of green ammonia. The initiative centers around Hygenco’s plan to construct a state-of-the-art green ammonia facility at Gopalpur port, located in Odisha. The first phase of this ambitious project is slated to commence operations by 2027, with a production capacity of 600 tonnes per day (TPD).
By early 2028, the facility aims to double its capacity to 1,200 TPD, eventually scaling up to produce 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030. This expansion underscores India’s commitment to leveraging its renewable energy potential, particularly in the realm of green hydrogen technology, where Hygenco currently operates the country’s sole commercial green hydrogen plant.
The partnership between Hygenco and Ameropa seeks to meet the burgeoning global demand for low-carbon ammonia. Ameropa, a prominent Swiss trading company, views this collaboration as pivotal in its strategy to secure a reliable supply chain of sustainable ammonia. The focus markets for these green ammonia exports include Europe and various Asian regions, aligning with international efforts to advance sustainable agricultural practices and reduce carbon footprints.
Hygenco’s strategic positioning in the green energy sector is further reinforced by its substantial investment commitment of $2.5 billion over the next three years in green hydrogen and ammonia projects across India. This initiative not only aims to bolster India’s export capabilities but also to enhance global sustainability by promoting cleaner energy alternatives.
