Indian-American organizations and advocacy groups in the US have warmly welcomed the appointment of Vinay Kwatra as India’s new ambassador to the United States. Kwatra, a seasoned diplomat and former foreign secretary, was appointed on Friday to fill the position left vacant since Taranjit Sandhu’s retirement in January.

Indiaspora extended congratulations to Kwatra, acknowledging his distinguished 30-year career, most recently as Foreign Secretary. The organization emphasized Kwatra’s potential to play a crucial role in strengthening and growing the US-India relationship, expressing eagerness to collaborate with him.

Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF), praised Kwatra for his adept handling of India’s foreign policy amid significant geopolitical challenges. He highlighted Kwatra’s oversight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic state visit to Washington last year, which bolstered bilateral ties.

The USISPF looks forward to working with Ambassador Kwatra to enhance the US-India strategic partnership. Atul Keshap, president of the US India Business Council (USIBC), also extended warm wishes, noting Kwatra’s extensive experience and previous contributions to US-India relations. USIBC is eager to collaborate with Kwatra to advance bilateral trade and economic ties.

Kwatra, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988, served as Foreign Secretary from May 2022 to July 2024. His appointment is seen as a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between India and the United States.
