IndiGo has announced the addition of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, to its international route network, marking it as the airline’s 34th international and 122nd overall destination. The new non-stop daily flights between Chennai and Jaffna will commence on September 1, enhancing the connectivity between India and Sri Lanka.

This strategic move is set to bolster the cultural and trade relations between the two nations, which have a long history of cooperation in commerce, infrastructure, and air travel. Bookings for these flights opened on August 1, reflecting the airline’s commitment to providing more travel options.

India remains the top market for international tourists arriving in Sri Lanka, with Indian travelers accounting for 25.2% of the total arrivals in June 2024. The introduction of the new route is expected to cater to the growing interest in travel to Jaffna, significantly reducing travel time with a 75-minute flight.

Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, expressed his enthusiasm for the new route, highlighting its potential to enhance trade and tourism between India and Sri Lanka. He noted that the airline already offers 30 weekly flights from India to Colombo, further strengthening the air connectivity between the two countries.

With over 21,000 passengers having flown the Chennai-Jaffna route in just nine months last year, IndiGo’s new direct flight is a timely addition, supporting the resurgence of tourism and providing seamless connectivity for travelers.
