IPL 2025: Everything You Need to Know About the Exciting Season Ahead

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling cricket tournaments yet. With 10 teams battling it out for glory, the competition promises excitement from March 22 to May 25. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming season, from teams and players to the full schedule and match format.
When Is IPL 2025?
The 18th edition of IPL kicks off on March 22 and will run until May 25. Fans can look forward to an exhilarating few months of cricket, with 74 matches scheduled across multiple cities.
What’s the IPL Format for 2025?
The 2025 edition follows a modified league format. The 10 teams will be divided into two groups. Each team plays 14 group-stage matches, facing teams in their own group twice, as well as teams in the opposite group once.
After the group stage, the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs. The first and second-ranked teams will compete in Qualifier 1, while the third and fourth-ranked teams will meet in the Eliminator. The winners of both these games will advance to Qualifier 2, where they’ll fight for a place in the final.
Where Are the Matches Held?
This year’s IPL will be played in 13 iconic venues across India, with Eden Gardens hosting the opening match, Qualifier 2, and the final. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s home ground will stage the Qualifier 1 and Eliminator matches. Teams will play in their home cities, but some may split their home games across multiple locations.
Key Players and Big Names in IPL 2025
The 2025 IPL will feature some of the world’s biggest cricket stars. England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, is one of the most anticipated players after being bought for ₹157.5 million by Gujarat Titans.
Indian stars like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli are also set to shine. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, will continue leading Chennai Super Kings, while Sharma and Kohli, retired from international T20s, will represent Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, respectively.
Notable Absences:
Though the IPL brings together top global talent, Pakistan’s cricketers remain absent due to ongoing political tensions. Despite a green light from their government, no Pakistani player has participated in the IPL since 2008.
