External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated the government’s commitment to an ‘India first’ policy during an interview on ’12 years of Foreign Policy’. He highlighted the importance of aligning decisions with national interests and navigating diplomatic complexities among major powers. Jaishankar stressed the need for clarity on India’s priorities, independent of the policies of other nations.
Addressing queries on relations with China and the US, Jaishankar compared the ‘America First’ approach of the US with India’s ‘India First’ stance. He acknowledged the evolving global engagements of the US but emphasized India’s distinct position as a non-NATO member. Jaishankar discussed the impact of US policies on various global issues, including tariffs and market access.
Regarding China, Jaishankar acknowledged recent tensions but noted a relative stabilization in the relationship. He highlighted the ongoing diplomatic ties with Russia, Japan, and Europe, emphasizing the significant progress in India’s relations with Europe. The Free Trade Agreement and strategic partnerships have strengthened cooperation between India and Europe, marking a notable improvement in diplomatic relations.
