Jiya Rai Becomes First Indian to Win Prestigious WOWSA Award 2024

In a historic achievement, 16-year-old Jiya Rai from Mumbai has become the first Indian to receive the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) Award 2024. She secured the top position in the ‘Adaptive Performance of the Year’ category, recognizing her remarkable swim across the English Channel.
A Historic Swim Across the English Channel
On July 28, 2024, Jiya Rai embarked on a challenging journey, swimming 34 kilometers across the English Channel from Abbot’s Cliff in England to Pointe de la Courte-Dune in France. She completed this feat in 17 hours and 25 minutes, setting a record as the world’s fastest and youngest para swimmer with Autism Spectrum Disorder to conquer the English Channel. This accomplishment not only highlights her physical endurance but also serves as an inspiration for individuals with similar conditions worldwide.
Recognition by the World Open Water Swimming Association
The WOWSA Awards, established in 2008, honor outstanding achievements in open water swimming across six categories. In 2024, the awards evaluated 177 candidates, with winners determined through a combination of votes from an 83-member Voting Academy and Advisory Board, along with over 6,000 public votes. Jiya’s exceptional performance earned her the gold in the ‘Adaptive Performance of the Year’ category, making her the first Indian to receive this esteemed accolade.
Overcoming Challenges: Jiya’s Journey with Autism
Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, a neurological condition affecting communication and interaction, Jiya faced unique challenges from an early age. Her father, Madan Rai, Master Chief at Arms II in the Indian Navy, recognized swimming as a therapeutic activity for her. Under his guidance, Jiya began swimming at a young age, using the sport as a medium to improve her sensory and motor skills.
Early Achievements and National Recognition
Jiya’s swimming prowess became evident early on. She gained national attention on February 18, 2021, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned her accomplishments during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program. Her feats include entering the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records for her swimming milestones. In December 2022, she was part of a six-member relay team that swam 1,100 kilometers from Mumbai to Goa and back over 11 days, where she was the only female and the youngest participant.
A Role Model for Inclusivity and Determination
Jiya Rai’s journey exemplifies how determination and support can help overcome significant challenges. Her achievements have not only set new records in the world of open water swimming but have also raised awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder. By breaking barriers, Jiya has become a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating that with resilience and dedication, one can turn perceived limitations into extraordinary accomplishments.
