The Returning Officer overseeing the Rajya Sabha biennial elections in Madhya Pradesh declined Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination papers, the sole Congress candidate. The rejection came after objections were raised regarding Natarajan’s alleged non-disclosure of a case pending in a Telangana court. The BJP contended that Natarajan had provided political support to an individual facing serious accusations.
Congress leader Umang Singhar dismissed the BJP’s objections as politically motivated, emphasizing that no formal case had been registered against Natarajan. Singhar argued that according to Election Commission guidelines, disclosure is required only when a case is officially filed, not upon receiving a notice. Natarajan, on her part, labeled the situation as a “political conspiracy” and opposed the allegations made against her in the Hyderabad court.
Singhar criticized the BJP, accusing them of being apprehensive of a woman with Gandhian principles. He alleged that the BJP was resorting to unfair tactics to influence the electoral process due to Congress’s increasing popularity. Singhar highlighted Congress’s unity, commitment to democratic values, and expressed confidence in winning the election through honesty, constitutional principles, and public support.
