Shyam Sablani, professor of food engineering at Washington State University (WSU), has been honored with the Yang “Wendy” Liu award for his efforts in making international students feel at home. The award, presented by Sharon Fraser-Allen from the Office of International Programs Intensive American Language Center, recognizes excellence in teaching international students.

Nominated by his student Smit Patel from the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, Sablani was praised for his supportive approach. Patel highlighted how Sablani helped him find his passion and direction during his challenging first year. “He provided me with time, support, and encouragement to overcome my struggles,” Patel wrote in his nomination.

The award is named after Yang “Wendy” Liu, a former faculty member of the Intensive American Language Center who taught English at WSU for nearly a decade before passing away from cancer in 2019. Liu was known for her work with East Asian students and her dedication to helping students and faculty both in and out of the classroom. The award was established to honor her contributions.

Sablani, who joined WSU in 2007, holds a Ph.D. in food engineering from McGill University, Montreal. He has also taught at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman and worked as a research associate at Agri-Food Canada. Expressing his gratitude, Sablani said, “This award validates my teaching philosophy, boosts my confidence, and reinforces my dedication to strive toward excellence.”

Bala Krishnamoorthy, a professor of mathematics and statistics at WSU Vancouver, was the first recipient of this award last year. Faculty and staff are eligible for nomination for the annual award.
