Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh arrives in New Delhi today for a significant state visit aimed at enhancing trade and investment ties. This visit, occurring during Prime Minister Modi’s third term, follows the recent death of Nguyen Phu Trong, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, whose passing was deeply mourned by Indian leaders.

During his visit from July 30 to August 1, Prime Minister Chinh will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers and business leaders. On August 1, he will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and visit RajGhat to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi. He will hold bilateral talks with PM Modi, attend a luncheon in his honor, and meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The visit highlights the robust historical ties between India and Vietnam, which were upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Vietnam in 2016. India regards Vietnam as a crucial partner in its Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific strategy.

In a related development, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval attended the state funeral of Nguyen Phu Trong, offering condolences and support to the Vietnamese leadership. The trade relations between India and Vietnam have flourished, with bilateral trade reaching $14.82 billion in 2023-2024, underscoring the deepening economic partnership.
