Language: Kannada
Age Rating: U/A (Suitable for viewers above 16 years)
Genre: Comedy, Emotional Drama

Vidyapati, directed by Esham and Haseen (of Ikkat fame), is a comedy-drama with emotional undertones, featuring Nagabhushana, Malaika Vasupal, and Garuda Ram in key roles. It attempts to blend laughter with life lessons—but while the performances shine, the storytelling doesn’t always land.

Set in a contemporary middle-class backdrop, the film follows a man who chases a luxurious life at the cost of his values—only to discover what really matters when life throws him a challenge. Vidyapati is an honest attempt at blending slapstick comedy with heart, though the script’s predictability and uneven tone hold it back.

A Story of Greed, Redemption, and Relationships

Vidyapati centers around Siddu, aka Vidyapati (played by Nagabhushana), a lively, mischievous man from a humble family, who dreams of escaping poverty. He cons his way into the heart (and house) of budding actress Vidya (Malaika Vasupal), building a life of comfort on deception and charm.

His bubble bursts when he’s humiliated in public by gangster Jaggu (Garuda Ram), and his wife challenges him to win her respect back—not through words, but by standing up for himself. What follows is a journey of redemption sprinkled with humor, awkwardness, and realizations.

What Works

✅ Nagabhushana’s Versatility Shines
Nagabhushana handles both comic and emotional scenes with commitment. His portrayal of a flawed, selfish man finding his way back to love and dignity is convincing.

✅ Engaging First Half with Solid Laughs
The comedy lands well in the first half, especially through situational humor and punchy dialogues. Siddu’s chaotic antics bring genuine laughs.

✅ An Unexpected Hero: Daali Dhananjay
His cameo as the mysterious “Anaconda” brings energy and excitement, with one of the best action sequences in the film.

✅ Themes of Redemption & Relationships
Despite the slapstick tone, the film touches on serious themes—greed, family bonds, self-worth—offering a meaningful message beneath the laughs.

What Doesn’t Work?

❌ Weak Antagonist (Garuda Ram) – His performance lacks menace, making the conflict feel underwhelming.

❌ Malaika Vasupal’s Underutilized Role – Despite the film being titled Vidyapati, her character gets limited screen time and depth.

❌ Formulaic Screenplay – The story follows a predictable template without fresh twists, making it feel like a missed opportunity.

Performances

  • Nagabhushana (Siddu/Vidyapati): Carries the film with charm and energy. His transformation arc, while familiar, is engaging.
  • Malaika Vasupal (Vidya): Appears briefly but leaves an impression. She adds emotional depth with a grounded performance.
  • Garuda Ram (Jaggu): A menacing setup, but underwhelming execution. His antagonist role lacks the punch it promised.
  • Daali Dhananjay (Anaconda): A show-stealer in a limited role. His quirky entry and action scenes lift the film’s tempo.

Technical Aspects

🎥 Cinematography: Functional but lacks visual flair. While a few scenes pop, many frames feel flat and rushed.

🎵 Music: Bossmode’s score supports the film’s tone well. It bridges transitions between comedy and emotional beats effectively.

✂️ Editing: The pacing feels inconsistent—some scenes overstay their welcome while others rush past key developments.

🎬 Direction: Esham and Haseen show sparks of brilliance but fall back on formulaic storytelling. Their earlier freshness seen in Ikkat is somewhat missing here.

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)

Vidyapati is a light-hearted entertainer with flashes of emotion, comedy, and social reflection. While the script plays it safe, the film still manages to deliver moments of laughter and introspection, mainly thanks to Nagabhushana’s earnest performance.

For fans of breezy Kannada comedies and underdog redemption stories, Vidyapati is a decent one-time watch. It’s not without flaws, but its heart is in the right place.

If you’re looking for a fun film with an emotional undercurrent and a charismatic lead, Vidyapati is worth adding to your weekend watchlist.
