In a thrilling display of cricketing prowess, India clinched the Champions Trophy on March 9, 2025, in Dubai, defeating New Zealand by four wickets. The tournament was marked by standout performances, notably by India’s Virat Kohli and Australia’s Steve Smith, whose contrasting narratives added depth to the event.

Kohli Silences Critics with Stellar Performances

Virat Kohli, facing scrutiny over his recent Test form, showcased his enduring class in the Champions Trophy. In the group stage against arch-rivals Pakistan, Kohli anchored India’s chase of 242 runs with an unbeaten 100 off 111 balls, demonstrating patience and strategic acumen on a sluggish Dubai pitch. His innings featured key partnerships that ensured a six-wicket victory with 45 balls remaining.

The semi-final against Australia further cemented Kohli’s status as a master chaser. Chasing a target of 265, India found stability through Kohli’s composed 84-run knock, guiding the team to a four-wicket win and securing a spot in the final. Australian captain Steve Smith lauded Kohli, referring to him as “arguably the best chaser the game has seen.”

Steve Smith Bids Farewell to ODI Cricket

The tournament also witnessed the end of an era with Steve Smith announcing his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following Australia’s semi-final exit. The 35-year-old veteran top-scored for Australia with 73 runs in his final match but couldn’t prevent the team’s defeat. Smith concluded his illustrious ODI career with 5,800 runs and 12 centuries over 170 matches since his debut in 2010. He expressed satisfaction with his achievements, including two World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, and will continue to contribute to Australian cricket through Test matches and Twenty20 internationals.

New Zealand’s Journey and Fielding Brilliance

New Zealand’s path to the final was marked by resilience and exceptional fielding. A highlight was Glenn Phillips’ stunning catch against India in the group stage, where he leaped full stretch at backward point to dismiss Kohli for 11 runs. This moment not only shifted the game’s momentum but also showcased the high standards of fielding excellence in the tournament.

England’s Early Exit and Leadership Changes

England’s campaign was unexpectedly short-lived. Despite posting a formidable 351 runs against Australia, they were unable to defend the total, leading to a demoralizing defeat. A subsequent loss to Afghanistan sealed their exit from the tournament. In the aftermath, Jos Buttler resigned as England’s white-ball captain, reflecting on the team’s consecutive failures in ICC events, including unsuccessful defenses of their T20 and 50-over World Cup titles.

Rohit Sharma’s Continued Commitment

Speculation surrounded India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, regarding a potential retirement following the tournament. However, after leading India to victory in the final with a top score of 76 runs, Rohit dispelled the rumors, affirming his ongoing dedication to the team’s future endeavors.
