Visiting Sri Kartarpur Sahib was an unforgettable experience—one that was not only deeply spiritual but also a reflection of history, culture, and devotion. On March 2, 2025, I had the privilege of making this sacred journey to the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the revered founder of Sikhism. This article aims to provide a detailed guide for those planning a visit to Kartarpur Sahib while ensuring it is SEO-friendly and informative.

Historical Significance of Sri Kartarpur Sahib

Historical Significance of Sri Kartarpur Sahib

Sri Kartarpur Sahib, located in Pakistan, is a place of immense religious significance. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, after years of extensive travel and spreading the message of oneness, spent the last 18 years of his life in the village of Kartarpur. The Gurudwara stands as a testimony to his teachings and continues to be a site of pilgrimage for devotees from across the world.

The Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak, situated about 1 km from the Indo-Pakistan border on the east bank of the River Ravi, serves as the starting point for this divine journey for Indian pilgrims.

How to Reach Sri Kartarpur Sahib from Amritsar

My journey began from Amritsar in a comfortable Toyota vehicle, and the drive to the Indian side of the border took approximately one and a half hours. This seamless road trip is a great way to soak in the beauty of Punjab before entering the immigration zone.

Visa-Free Travel and Permit Process

One of the most fascinating aspects of visiting Kartarpur Sahib is that it is a visa-free pilgrimage. However, visitors must apply for an online permit well in advance. I submitted my documents two months before my travel date and received the permit via email. This step is crucial for a hassle-free experience.

Crossing the Indo-Pak Border

Upon reaching the Indian border, I entered the Dera Baba Nanak immigration and customs station, where my passport and permit were thoroughly checked. After completing the immigration process, we were directed towards a shuttle service that took us across the border in just a few minutes.

On the Pakistan side, pilgrims are required to pay a $20 entry fee before their documents are verified. Post-clearance, we boarded a bus that took us via a four-lane highway straight to Sri Kartarpur Sahib. The drive itself was an emotional and surreal experience, filled with anticipation and reverence.

The Spiritual Experience at Sri Kartarpur Sahib

Upon arriving at the majestic Gurudwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib, I was overwhelmed with emotions. The serene white structure stood tall, welcoming devotees into its sacred premises. Walking through the Gurudwara, I felt a deep sense of spiritual enlightenment, historical reverence, and religious devotion.

Participating in Langar

Seeking Blessings and Participating in Langar

I stepped inside the Gurudwara, sought blessings, and participated in the soulful prayers. The divine atmosphere, the hymns of Gurbani, and the presence of fellow devotees made it an experience beyond words.

No visit to a Gurudwara is complete without partaking in the Langar (community meal). The meal, served selflessly by volunteers, was not only delicious but also deeply satisfying—an embodiment of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings on equality and selfless service.

Exploring the Shopping Area

Before heading back, I explored the shopping area within the complex, which offered a variety of items including Pakistani clothing, souvenirs, and religious artifacts. It was a delight to walk through these shops, bringing back memories of a culture that is so close yet divided by borders.

Returning to India – Completing the Journey

After spending several hours at the Gurudwara, we boarded the bus back to the border. The return process involved another short shuttle ride to the Indian side, followed by a final document verification. After completing these formalities, I took my car back to Amritsar, cherishing every moment of this profoundly enriching journey.

Why You Must Visit Kartarpur Sahib

If you are visiting Amritsar, make sure you do not limit your trip to the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh alone. A visit to Sri Kartarpur Sahib is an experience of a lifetime—one that connects you with the spiritual essence of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the rich history of Sikhism.

Key Takeaways for Visitors:

  • Apply for the permit at least 2 months in advance
  • Carry a valid passport and printout of the approved permit
  • Be prepared to pay a $20 entry fee on the Pakistan side
  • Enjoy Langar and immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance
  • Explore the local shopping area for souvenirs

Visiting Sri Kartarpur Sahib is not just a pilgrimage—it is a journey that touches your soul and connects you with the divine. If you ever find yourself in Amritsar, do not miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk the path Guru Nanak Dev Ji once walked.
