A Monumental Tribute in the Heart of London

In a landmark celebration of Indian cinema’s global influence, a bronze statue depicting Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the beloved stars of ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ), is set to be unveiled at London’s iconic Leicester Square. This installation commemorates the 25th anniversary of the film, marking it as the first Bollywood movie to be honored in the ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail.

DDLJ’s Enduring Legacy

Released in 1995, DDLJ shattered box office records and became the longest-running Hindi film in history. Directed by Aditya Chopra, the romantic saga of Raj and Simran not only captivated audiences worldwide but also garnered numerous accolades, including 10 Filmfare Awards. Its portrayal of love and cultural values resonated deeply, solidifying its status as a timeless classic.

Leicester Square: A Fitting Location

The choice of Leicester Square for the statue holds special significance. In DDLJ, this bustling London locale served as the backdrop where Raj and Simran’s paths first crossed, setting the stage for their unforgettable journey. The statue will be strategically placed along the eastern terrace, outside the Odeon Cinema, mirroring the film’s memorable scene and allowing fans to relive the magic.

Joining Cinematic Legends

This tribute places Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol alongside esteemed film icons already featured in the ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail, such as Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, and Batman. The inclusion of DDLJ’s lead pair underscores Bollywood’s expanding global footprint and its cultural impact beyond Indian borders.

Statements from Key Figures

Mark Williams, Director of Destination Marketing at Heart of London Business Alliance, emphasized the significance of this addition: “It’s fantastic to be adding such titans of international cinema to our trail as Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood and the cultural bridges that cinema can help build.”

Avtar Panesar, Vice President of Special Projects at Yash Raj Films, reflected on the film’s milestone: “When Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was released 25 years ago, it changed the face of the industry and captured the hearts of everyone who saw it. We’re thrilled to be the first film of Indian origin to be represented in ‘Scenes in the Square’.”

A Celebration for Fans Worldwide

The unveiling of this statue not only honors the legacy of DDLJ but also serves as a testament to the universal appeal of Bollywood cinema. Fans from around the globe can look forward to visiting Leicester Square to witness this historic tribute, celebrating a film that continues to inspire love and connection across cultures.
