The Indian film industry mourns the loss of veteran producer Salim Akhtar, who passed away on April 8, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 82. Akhtar was instrumental in launching the careers of renowned actresses Rani Mukerji and Tamannaah Bhatia, leaving an indelible mark on Bollywood.

A Legacy of Discovering Talent

Salim Akhtar’s keen eye for talent led him to introduce Rani Mukerji to Hindi cinema with the 1997 film ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat.’ Years later, in 2005, he launched Tamannaah Bhatia with ‘Chand Sa Roshan Chehra.’ Both actresses have since become prominent figures in the industry, a testament to Akhtar’s visionary approach to filmmaking.

Prolific Contributions to Indian Cinema

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Akhtar produced several notable films that contributed significantly to Bollywood’s landscape. His filmography includes titles such as ‘Qayamat’ (1983), ‘Loha’ (1987), ‘Batwara’ (1989), ‘Phool Aur Angaare’ (1993), and ‘Baazi’ (1995). In 2000, he produced ‘Badal,’ starring Bobby Deol and Rani Mukerji, further showcasing his commitment to delivering compelling narratives to the silver screen.

Final Rites and Industry Tributes

Akhtar’s funeral took place on April 9, 2025, following the Zohra Namaz, at the graveyard near Irla Mosque in JVPD. The ceremony witnessed the presence of numerous Bollywood personalities who came to pay their respects. Among them were actors Raj Babbar, Raza Murad, Firoz Khan of ‘Mahabharat’ fame, and Shahbaz Khan, reflecting the deep respect and admiration Akhtar commanded within the industry.

Survived by Family

Salim Akhtar is survived by his wife, Shama Akhtar, and son, Samad Akhtar. As the film fraternity and fans come to terms with this loss, his legacy continues to inspire and influence future generations in Indian cinema.
