Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi to Get Futuristic Urban Travel by 2028

In a bold move to redefine urban mobility, Sarla Aviation has introduced ‘Shunya’, India’s first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, set to launch air taxi services in three major cities—Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi—by 2028.

With city traffic worsening by the year, Sarla Aviation’s innovation is expected to bring relief to daily commuters, offering a sustainable, time-saving, and futuristic alternative to traditional road transport.

Meet ‘Shunya’: The Future of Commuting

‘Shunya’ is a sleek six-seater electric aircraft built to revolutionize city transport. Designed for short-range trips between 20–40 kilometers, the eVTOL aircraft can soar at speeds up to 250 km/h. What would normally take hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic can now be achieved in a matter of minutes.

For instance, a trip from the airport to the city center in Bengaluru that usually takes over two hours during peak traffic will take just 19 minutes by air taxi—at an estimated cost comparable to premium ground taxi services.

Strategic Urban Integration

The company is working closely with city planners and airport authorities to ensure seamless integration of air taxis into urban infrastructure. Bengaluru will serve as the first launchpad, with helipads and vertiports being planned for easy pickup and drop-off. Expansion to Mumbai and Delhi will follow soon after, with Pune also being considered for future operations.

Sarla Aviation’s vision is to make electric air travel accessible—not just a luxury, but a part of daily life for urban professionals and travelers alike.

Smart Engineering for Fast, Clean, and Quiet Travel

The Shunya aircraft is powered by seven electric motors and supported by four isolated battery packs, allowing multiple short trips on a single charge. It takes just 15 minutes to recharge between flights, ensuring quick turnaround times and maximum efficiency.

Despite its futuristic build, the aircraft is built with comfort in mind, offering space for six passengers plus luggage. In addition to noise reduction, the fully electric engine ensures zero emissions, aligning with India’s broader goals for sustainable development and cleaner air.

Not Just Commute—A Lifesaving Mission Too

Sarla Aviation is also planning to launch a free air ambulance service across major Indian metros. These specially-outfitted versions of the Shunya aircraft will provide rapid emergency transport, particularly in traffic-congested cities where every minute counts.

This dual-purpose approach—commercial and humanitarian—demonstrates the company’s commitment to using advanced technology for societal impact, not just convenience.

Taking Flight by 2028

With regulatory approvals in progress and testing already underway, Sarla Aviation aims to officially launch its air taxi services by 2028. The goal is to operate at a scale where flying becomes as routine and affordable as booking a cab.

As cities continue to expand vertically and congestion rises, electric air taxis like Shunya may well be the next evolution in public transport—blending speed, sustainability, and smart city innovation.
