In a groundbreaking move for India’s entertainment and tourism sectors, Universal Studios is preparing to launch its first-ever theme park in the country — and it’s happening right next to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The iconic global entertainment brand is joining hands with Bharti Enterprises, led by Sunil Mittal, to set up an indoor amusement park within a massive 3-million-square-foot retail complex being developed by Bharti Real Estate at Delhi Aerocity. The mall, projected to be India’s largest, is expected to open its doors by mid-2027.

As per reports, Bharti Enterprises will allocate 300,000 square feet — around 10% of the total leasable space — to this high-profile entertainment venture. Talks are underway with Universal Studios and other international partners to finalize plans for the indoor park, which will be a key anchor for the upcoming mall.

“This isn’t just a mall — it’s a destination,” said SK Sayal, CEO of Bharti Real Estate, highlighting the project’s ambition to combine retail, hospitality, and world-class entertainment under one roof. The entire Aerocity development has the potential to span 17 million square feet of built-up space, reinforcing Delhi’s image as a global commercial and leisure hub.

Universal Studios’ entry into India marks a $5 billion investment in the growing Indian leisure market, with construction expected to commence as early as 2026. The project is poised to rival global amusement destinations, tapping into India’s rapidly expanding middle-class population and increasing appetite for immersive, family-friendly entertainment.

Delhi’s recent decision to allow round-the-clock operations for restaurants and bars in Aerocity is further expected to boost footfall, making it an all-day, all-year entertainment zone for locals and international tourists alike.

Universal Studios Japan alone outpaces the revenue of India’s entire amusement park industry. Now, with this landmark venture, Universal is betting big on India becoming Asia’s next major theme park destination.
