Aloo Tikki is a beloved Indian street food made with mashed potatoes, aromatic spices, and herbs. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, this snack is perfect as a teatime treat, a party appetizer, or even a hearty meal when paired with chutneys or curd.

Ingredients

aloo tikki 1
  • 4 medium-sized potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or as needed)
  • 1/4 cup boiled peas (optional)
  • 1 green chili (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala
  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves (chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tikki Mixture

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, boiled peas (if using), green chili, ginger, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, garam masala, chaat masala, fresh coriander, and salt.
  2. Add breadcrumbs a little at a time to bind the mixture. The consistency should be firm enough to shape into patties.

Step 2: Shape the Tikkis

  1. Divide the mixture into equal portions (about 8–10).
  2. Roll each portion into a ball and flatten gently into a round patty.
  3. Optional: For extra crispiness, coat each tikki lightly with breadcrumbs.

Step 3: Fry the Tikkis

  1. Heat a pan with a thin layer of oil or a shallow fryer.
  2. Place the tikkis on the hot pan and cook on medium heat.
  3. Fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides, flipping carefully.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Serve hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.
  2. For a chaat-style variation, top the tikkis with yogurt, chutneys, sev, and chopped onions.

Tips for the Perfect Aloo Tikki

  • Use starchy potatoes to prevent the tikkis from breaking while frying.
  • Ensure there’s no excess moisture in the mashed potatoes for a crisp texture.
  • Adjust spices and add a pinch of lemon juice for a tangy kick.

Aloo Tikki is a versatile dish that never fails to impress. Whether you enjoy it on its own or as part of a chaat platter, it’s always a crowd-pleaser!
