How It All Began: The Accidental Start

Back in 2013, Mr. Bhatia was visiting his daughter in the United States. While shopping with his wife and daughter, he stumbled upon a beautifully crafted owl figurine in a department store. The sight of the owl intrigued him, compelling him to purchase it, despite his wife questioning the need for it. His response was simple: he would use it as a paperweight in his factory.

Little did he know that this single purchase would ignite a passion that would lead to a collection spanning over 23 countries. Each subsequent shopping trip became an opportunity to find another unique owl. He found himself drawn to exhibitions, department stores, and artisan markets in search of rare and artistic representations of owls.

The Click Moment: When Passion Took Over

After acquiring a few more owls, Mr. Bhatia experienced what he calls a “click moment.” He realized that his attraction to owls was not just a passing fancy but something deeper. One of the most memorable pieces in his collection is an owl made from 64 individually painted tiles by world-renowned artists. This masterpiece reinforced his growing fascination, encouraging him to continue collecting.

Cultural Significance of Owls

Owls are surrounded by myths and beliefs across different cultures. Some societies see them as harbingers of bad omens, while others revere them as symbols of prosperity. For instance, in Hindu mythology, the owl is considered the vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing wealth and fortune. Interestingly, in Indonesia, the national currency features an owl, reflecting its cultural importance.

Scientifically, owls have unique characteristics that set them apart from other birds:

  • They can rotate their necks up to 270 degrees.
  • Their large eyes provide enhanced night vision.
  • They can detect danger 50% faster than most birds.

These traits have contributed to their mystical and revered status in various traditions.

Memorable Finds & Collecting from 23+ Countries

Mr. Bhatia’s collection is not just about numbers—it’s about stories. Every owl in his possession comes with a memory. Some of the most notable incidents include:

  • Georgia: Visiting a historical museum, he discovered two beautifully crafted owls with inscriptions in ancient script. He bought them instantly, adding to his collection’s diversity.
  • New Zealand: On a scheduled trip back home, he spotted a magnificent crystal-like owl in a department store. Determined to buy it, he convinced his friends to extend their stay, ensuring he could return the next day to make the purchase.
  • Gifts from Friends & Suppliers: Recognizing his deep passion, friends and business associates from different countries have gifted him unique owls, further enriching his collection.

Achieving Recognition: The LIMCA Book of Records

With his collection exceeding 150 owls, Mr. Bhatia became curious about potential records. Attending an event where someone was felicitated for their unique collection, he wondered if his passion could also earn recognition. Upon researching, he found that the LIMCA Book of Records had a category for unique collections. He applied, and his massive owl collection earned him a place in the prestigious record book.

For the past four years, he has been honored in the LIMCA Book of Records, reinforcing his dedication and passion.

A Passion Worth Celebrating

What started as an accidental purchase turned into an extraordinary journey of passion, perseverance, and global recognition. Mr. Ramesh Bhatia’s story is an inspiring example of how hobbies can lead to remarkable achievements. His collection not only showcases artistic craftsmanship from around the world but also highlights the deep cultural and mystical significance of owls.
