Language: Hindi
Age Rating: UA (Suitable for viewers above 13 years)
Genre: Biographical, Courtroom Drama
Streaming on: ZEE5

A Stirring Real-Life Story That Misses Its Full Potential

Costao is a film with noble intentions. Based on the life of customs officer Costao Fernandes, it explores the journey of an honest man trapped in the machinery of corruption, politics, and injustice. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role, the film delves into a powerful real-life incident where an upright officer loses eight years of his life over a wrongful murder charge.

At its heart, Costao is about integrity—how one man’s resilience stands tall even when the system fails him. The plot has all the ingredients for a compelling courtroom drama, but somewhere between ambition and execution, the impact weakens.

Performances: Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the Soul of This Film

Nawazuddin Siddiqui delivers a deeply sincere performance. As Costao Fernandes, he conveys both inner turmoil and quiet strength. His ability to emote with restraint is what keeps you engaged. Whether he’s dealing with the trauma of wrongful imprisonment or facing the system that failed him, Nawazuddin makes you feel his every moment of isolation and strength.

Priya Bapat, as Maria—Costao’s wife—does her part well, though her role is underwritten. The family angle, which could have added more emotional depth, remains on the sidelines.

Direction, Style, and Cinematic Choices

Director Sejal Shah approaches the film with honesty but falls short when it comes to cinematic impact. The narrative is often too linear and lacks dramatic build-up. The courtroom scenes, which should be gripping and intense, come off as restrained and at times, flat.

The Goa backdrop adds authenticity, but the film never explores its cultural richness. It sticks to the story, which is commendable, but could have benefited from a broader visual and emotional palette.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works:

  • Nawazuddin’s Performance: He elevates every scene with his grounded and impactful portrayal.
  • Real-Life Relevance: The story of Costao Fernandes is inspiring and deserves to be told.
  • Honest Treatment: The film doesn’t overdramatize, which lends it a sense of realism.

Where It Falters:

  • Surface-Level Execution: The story scratches the surface but never dives deep into the emotional complexities of Costao’s suffering.
  • Lack of Impactful Dialogue: A few powerful lines could have turned key moments into cinematic highlights.
  • Pacing and Narrative Flow: The film doesn’t drag, but it also never truly grips you. It moves in a straight line without emotional highs or lows.
  • Underutilized Supporting Cast: Talented actors like Kishore Kumar G are present but not fully explored.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️star (3/5)

Costao is a sincere film with a compelling true story at its core, anchored by a stellar performance from Nawazuddin Siddiqui. However, it falls short of delivering the emotional depth and narrative intensity required to make it unforgettable. It’s a respectful tribute to an unsung hero—but one that could’ve used more firepower in its storytelling.

Should You Watch It?

Yes, if you appreciate true stories and powerful performances. Costao isn’t flawless, but Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s portrayal makes it a meaningful one-time watch. The film offers a quiet reflection on justice and sacrifice—and that alone is worth your time.
