After years of uncertainty and behind-the-scenes drama, Dostana 2 is finally back on track — but with a brand-new cast, platform, and creative direction. Dharma Productions has officially revived the much-anticipated sequel to their 2008 cult classic Dostana, and this time, it’s headed straight to OTT via Amazon Prime Video.

From Shelved to Streaming: A New Avatar for Dostana 2

Originally announced in 2019 with Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor, and debutant Lakshya in the lead roles, Dostana 2 hit a roadblock early on. The project was shelved after just 20 days of filming, reportedly due to creative differences between Kartik and producer Karan Johar. The fallout became a hot topic in the industry, casting a shadow over the project’s future.

Now in 2025, Dharma Productions has decided to relaunch Dostana 2 from scratch, this time as a direct-to-digital film. The screenplay has been reworked to suit OTT audiences, and the sequel will now premiere as an Amazon Prime Original, contrary to earlier reports that suggested a Netflix release.

Vikrant Massey and Lakshya Take the Lead

In this new version, the lead roles are being played by Vikrant Massey and Lakshya. Vikrant, fresh off the success of films like 12th Fail and Love Storiyaan, brings his signature emotional depth to the character originally intended for Kartik Aaryan. Lakshya, who garnered attention for his intense performance in the critically acclaimed action thriller Kill, plays the character with whom Vikrant’s role shares a romantic arc.

The updated storyline features the two male leads as gay protagonists, making Dostana 2 a bold and timely take on modern relationships in India.

Sreeleela Joins as the Female Lead

Adding further excitement to the project is the inclusion of Sreeleela as the female lead. The rising star from the South Indian film industry has recently gained significant popularity in Bollywood, making her casting a highly anticipated move. This marks her first collaboration with Dharma Productions and her debut in a mainstream Bollywood romantic comedy.

Audiences are eager to see the dynamic between Vikrant, Lakshya, and Sreeleela as the new-age trio redefines the narrative of friendship, love, and identity.

New Director, Fresh Vision

Dostana 2 will now be directed by Advait Chandan, known for his work in Secret Superstar and Laal Singh Chaddha. His recent directorial Loveyapa further proved his ability to handle layered narratives with emotion and humor. Chandan replaces Collin D’Cunha, who exited the project due to scheduling conflicts with Call Me Bae Season 2.

Production is expected to begin around November 2025, subject to Vikrant Massey’s availability. He is currently working on two other major films — a biopic on Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and the much-awaited Don 3.

Dharma Productions Expands OTT Slate

This reboot of Dostana 2 marks Dharma Productions’ sixth major OTT collaboration with Amazon Prime Video under their digital wing, Dharmatic Entertainment. Other projects in the partnership include Love Storiyaan, Ae Watan Mere Watan, Call Me Bae, The Tribe, and Daring Partners.

Additionally, Dharma is already developing Student of the Year 3 as a web series for JioCinema, further underlining their strategy to expand into the streaming space.

Kartik Aaryan and Karan Johar Reunite

Interestingly, even though Kartik is no longer associated with Dostana 2, his professional relationship with Karan Johar seems to have been mended. The duo is now collaborating on two upcoming projects — a romantic comedy with Ananya Panday directed by Sameer Vidwans, and Naagzilla, a creature comedy directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba of Fukrey fame.

The Dostana 2 revival promises to bring a fresh perspective to one of Bollywood’s most beloved franchises. With a talented new cast, a visionary director, and the creative flexibility of the OTT format, this version of Dostana 2 aims to blend humor, heart, and progressive storytelling in a way that resonates with today’s audiences.
