Language: Malayalam
Age Rating: U
Genre: Family Drama, Social Awareness
Released in Theatres: June 13, 2025

In an age where smartphones dominate every aspect of daily life, Ee Valayam emerges as a much-needed cinematic intervention. Directed by Revathy S Varmha, the film boldly addresses the increasingly alarming issue of screen addiction—particularly among children and teenagers. With a narrative grounded in family values, cultural nuances, and modern-day concerns, Ee Valayam blends realism with sensitivity to deliver an important message.

Plot: A Mirror to Modern Parenting Challenges

Ee Valayam follows the journey of Nilaavu (affectionately known as Neeli), a school-going teenager caught in the digital trap. Her growing dependence on screens, particularly mobile phones, begins affecting her academics, relationships, and mental well-being. As her parents and school authorities attempt to intervene, the film delves into the complexities of parenting in the digital age, the emotional consequences of nomophobia, and the generation gap in understanding technology.

Without being preachy, the film raises hard-hitting questions: Are we doing enough to protect our children from the pitfalls of screen addiction? And more importantly, how do we address the emotional void that makes children turn to their screens in the first place?

Direction and Screenplay: Bold in Message, Gentle in Tone

Revathy S Varmha deserves applause for tackling such a sensitive topic with clarity and restraint. The screenplay by Sreejith Mohandas effectively balances emotional storytelling with real-world relevance, ensuring the film remains engaging for both children and adults.

The decision to cast a newcomer in the lead role pays off, giving the story a fresh and authentic touch. The film’s pacing ensures that the emotional beats are well-placed without dragging the narrative, making it an accessible watch for families.

Performances: Authentic, Relatable, and Heartfelt

Ashly Usha, making her debut as Neeli, delivers a standout performance. Her portrayal of vulnerability, confusion, and eventual self-realization is nuanced and relatable, especially for young audiences. Her natural screen presence brings the character to life without overdramatization.

Veteran actors like Renji Panicker and Nandhu lend gravitas to the film, portraying concerned parents with depth and compassion. Muthumani, Shalu Rahim, and Sandra Nair add emotional texture to the story, while supporting actors such as Vinod Thomas and Akshay Prasanth deliver solid performances that ground the film in everyday reality.

Music and Cinematography: Tradition Meets Technology

The soundtrack is one of Ee Valayam’s most delightful surprises. Legendary composer Jerry Amaldev infuses the film with soulful melodies, supported by Rafeeq Ahmed and Santhosh Varma’s evocative lyrics. The highlight is a reimagined 18th-century Carnatic composition, shot against the majestic backdrop of Hampi, which elegantly blends classical heritage with contemporary fusion—underscoring the movie’s theme of old values meeting new-age challenges.

Anand Kamaland’s cinematography subtly captures the contrast between digital chaos and serene family life. The visuals stay intimate yet powerful, especially in classroom and home settings.

What Works:

  • Timely and socially relevant theme
  • Strong debut performance by Ashly Usha
  • Effective balance of drama and message without being didactic
  • Musical score that enhances emotional impact
  • Suitable for both children and parents

What Could Be Better:

  • Some plot transitions feel abrupt in the second half
  • Supporting characters could’ve used more backstory to deepen emotional stakes

Cultural Relevance: A Wake-Up Call for the Digital Generation

At its heart, Ee Valayam is not just a story about a child and her phone—it’s a reflection of a generation grappling with identity, connection, and emotional resilience in a digital world. By focusing on nomophobia (the fear of being without a mobile phone), the film opens up a much-needed dialogue on parenting, mental health, and the role of schools and communities in guiding the youth.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (4/5 Stars)

Ee Valayam is a meaningful and heartwarming family drama that offers both entertainment and introspection. With its socially conscious theme, strong performances, and resonant music, it earns its place as a must-watch for families navigating the complexities of modern parenting in the screen age.
