Adire Abhi (Abhinaya Krishna), who impressed audiences earlier with Chiranjeeva, returns with his most ambitious project yet — Karmakhya. Backed by My Film Productions and led by newcomer Samaira alongside powerhouse performers Samuthirakani, Abhirami, Sharanya Pradeep, Anand, and Dhanraj, this mysterious suspense thriller draws on the legend of Goddess Kamakhya and her Shakti Peeth to deliver a genre-bending experience. Released today, July 31, on the big screen, the film blends mythology, mystery, and social commentary into a story that keeps audiences guessing till the very end. Here’s our complete review.

Karmakhya is a mysterious supernatural thriller directed by Adire Abhi that draws power from the legend of Goddess Kamakhya without leaning on typical horror tropes. While the first half moves at a leisurely, almost routine pace as it sets up Kamakhya’s backstory, the film transforms into an edge-of-the-seat thriller once the real conflict kicks in at Sarojini and Prabhakar’s house. Newcomer Samaira delivers a striking debut performance, Samuthirakani brings both gravity and comic relief as SI Tirupati, and Abhirami’s negative twist is a genuine highlight. Backed by Giani’s impressive music and Kushender Ramesh Reddy’s strong visuals, the film offers a fresh spin on the thriller genre and rewards viewers who watch it with an open mind.

Plot Summary

The story opens with the legend of Goddess Kamakhya and her Shakti Peeth, where a family versed in tantric knowledge arrives in a village in Andhra Pradesh with a pregnant woman meant to channel the mantra’s power. When villagers kill the family, the unborn child miraculously survives, blessed by the goddess herself, and grows up an orphan. Years later, this child, Kamakhya (Samaira), is a hosteller and close friend of Pravalika (Sharanya Pradeep). After losing her job and falling behind on loan repayments, Kamakhya finds herself sent on an insurance assignment to a village, where she meets a grieving couple, Sarojini (Abhirami) and Prabhakar (Anand), mourning their late daughter. What begins as a routine visit spirals into a nightmare as the couple’s true, sinister intentions toward Kamakhya come to light, setting off a chain of dramatic twists involving SI Tirupati (Samuthirakani) and a shocking secret behind Pravalika herself.

Actor Performances

Samaira delivers a phenomenal debut as Kamakhya. Despite being a complete newcomer, she carries the film with remarkable confidence, blending innocence with striking screen presence to become the true highlight of Karmakhya.

Samuthirakani is outstanding as SI Tirupati, bringing both comic timing and emotional depth to the role. His grounded portrayal of a father-figure cop investigating the case adds real heart to the film.

Abhirami turns in a beautifully layered performance, masking a chilling negative streak beneath a warm, innocent exterior. The twist tied to her character is one of the film’s smartest surprises.

Anand matches Abhirami’s intensity beat for beat, and the reveal surrounding his character lands with equal impact, adding another compelling layer to the narrative.

Sharanya Pradeep shines in a role built entirely around a jaw-dropping twist, and she pulls it off with confidence that elevates the entire second half.

Dhanraj, along with Rocket Raghava and Madhunandan, round out the cast nicely, with Rocket Raghava’s comic energy adding welcome levity to the film’s darker moments.

Technical Craft

Direction

Adire Abhi picks a genuinely fresh premise, weaving mythology into a suspense-thriller framework instead of relying on conventional horror tropes. His command over the second half, packed with tension and twists, showcases strong directorial instinct.

Cinematography

Kushender Ramesh Reddy’s visuals lend the film a polished, atmospheric look that supports its mysterious tone throughout.

Music

Giani’s music is a definite asset, with an especially effective background score that heightens the suspense during key moments.

Editing

Sri Vara’s editing captures the essential beats of the story, and while the pacing occasionally slows, the craftsmanship holds the narrative together well.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Newcomer Samaira’s confident, attention-grabbing debut performance
  • A genuinely gripping, twist-heavy second half
  • Strong ensemble performances, especially from Samuthirakani and Abhirami
  • Giani’s impactful music and background score
  • A fresh take on the thriller genre without leaning on horror clichés
  • A thought-provoking message about superstition versus science

Weaknesses:

  • The first half unfolds at a slower, more routine pace
  • A few narrative links and character motivations could have been sharper
  • Slightly more polish in the writing would have elevated the overall impact

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ½ 4.5/5 stars

Karmakhya is a bold, refreshingly different thriller that blends mythology and suspense with genuine confidence. Anchored by a standout debut from Samaira and a stellar supporting cast, the film’s twist-laden second half more than makes up for its slower start. A must-watch for thriller fans looking for something different this week.
