  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-green chili paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Water (as needed for consistency)
  • Oil for greasing the appe pan

How to Make Leftover Dal Appe

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the leftover dal, semolina (or rice flour), and yogurt. Mix well to form a smooth batter.
  2. Add turmeric, red chili powder, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, chopped onions, grated carrots, coriander leaves, and ginger-green chili paste.
  3. Adjust the consistency by adding a little water if needed. The batter should be thick but pourable.
  4. Let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Just before cooking, add baking soda and mix well.

Step 2: Cook the Appe

  1. Heat an appe pan (paniyaram pan) and grease it with a little oil.
  2. Pour a spoonful of batter into each cavity.
  3. Cover and cook on a low-medium flame for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Once the bottom turns golden brown, flip and cook the other side until crisp.
  5. Repeat for the remaining batter.

  • Serve hot with coconut chutney, mint chutney, or tomato ketchup.
