The Malayalam film industry has witnessed many milestones, but the Lokah box office success is nothing short of extraordinary. Directed by Dominic Arun and headlined by Kalyani Priyadarshan, Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra has stormed past the ₹200 crore worldwide mark in just 13 days, delivering a staggering 600% profit on its ₹30 crore budget.

But the film’s triumph is not only financial—it represents a cultural revolution. Rooted in the legendary folklore of Kalliyankattu Neeli, the story has been reinvented by co-writer Santhy Balachandran to reflect a powerful feminist perspective.

Reimagining Neeli: From Vengeful Spirit to Feminist Superhero

In the original Aithihyamala tale, Neeli is portrayed as a bloodthirsty ghost, ultimately subdued by the priest Kadamattathu Kathanar. But in Lokah, Neeli transforms into Chandra, a savior with superhuman powers who protects her people.

Santhy Balachandran was determined that Neeli’s transformation should not be dictated by “a male patriarchal religious figure.” Instead, Neeli’s code of honor comes from her mother’s final words, anchoring the character in a deeply emotional and feminist narrative.

“I was very particular that Neeli should not be transformed by a patriarchal male figure. Her strength comes from her mother’s guidance, not control,” Santhy explained in an exclusive interview.

This bold reimagination makes Lokah more than just a superhero film—it’s a feminist statement.

Characters That Expose Misogyny

The feminist undertones extend beyond Neeli. The antagonist Inspector Nachiyappa Gowda (Sandy Master) embodies toxic masculinity, introduced in a scene referencing the cultural myth of Neeli—where a lone woman is deemed a threat to social order.

Despite surviving the virus that grants superhuman powers, Nachiyappa’s impure mindset leads him down a destructive path, making him a sharp contrast to Chandra’s values.

Even his family reflects entrenched patriarchy—his father glorifies toxic masculinity, while his mother is a silent victim, deliberately written without dialogue to symbolize voicelessness.

Box Office Records Shattered

The Lokah box office success is a phenomenon in Malayalam cinema:

  • Budget: ₹30 crore
  • Worldwide Collection (Day 13): ₹200 crore+
  • Profit: 600% in under 2 weeks
  • Shows Expanded: From 608 on opening day to 1,228 nationwide
  • Records: Overtook 2018, Premalu, and The Goat Life to become the 4th highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.

The film is now only ₹68 crore behind L2: Empuraan, despite being made on a fraction of the budget. Produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, this is one of the most profitable Malayalam blockbusters in history.

Why Lokah Box Office Success Matters

Malayalam cinema has often been celebrated for its realism and storytelling, but Lokah opens new doors:

  • It establishes a Malayalam superhero cinematic universe, with Tovino Thomas even making a cameo as Chathan.
  • It places a woman at the center of a superhero narrative, a rarity in Indian cinema.
  • It addresses patriarchy, misogyny, and internalized gender biases, making it not just entertaining but socially relevant.

The Lokah box office success is more than a commercial win—it’s a cinematic milestone. With Kalyani Priyadarshan’s groundbreaking performance, Dominic Arun’s bold vision, and Santhy Balachandran’s feminist reinterpretation, Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra is redefining what a superhero story can mean in Indian cinema.

If this is only Chapter 1, the Malayalam superhero universe is set for an extraordinary future.
