Language: Hindi
Genre: Gangster Drama
Age Rating: U/A

In this Maalik movie review, we explore how director Pulkit crafts an intense underworld drama set in 1980s Prayagraj, where power, politics, and betrayal shape the journey of an ordinary man into a feared gangster. While not revolutionary in its storytelling, Maalik thrives on realism, raw emotions, and above all—Rajkummar Rao’s stellar performance, which becomes the film’s unshakable backbone.

Plot: From Ordinary to Omnipotent in the Shadows of Crime

Maalik follows the transformation of Raghuveer Singh, a humble man whose ambition and disillusionment with the system drive him into the crime world. As he gains control over his surroundings and becomes the titular “Maalik,” his past, relationships, and moral compass come under fire. Set in the power corridors of 1980s Prayagraj, the film maps a slow-burning rise in the criminal hierarchy.

The first half focuses on his growth, strategic alliances, and betrayals, while the second half traces the consequences—lost friendships, political vendettas, and a life consumed by violence. While some narrative arcs lack tightness, the emotional core remains intact throughout.

Performances: Rajkummar Rao Shines, Strong Support Adds Depth

  • Rajkummar Rao delivers one of his most intense performances to date. He brings menace, vulnerability, and depth to a complex character, effortlessly switching between moments of reflection and ruthless action. His transformation—from a restrained commoner to a feared gangster—is both believable and riveting.
  • Manushi Chhillar, as Madhu, contributes charm and grace in romantic moments. While her emotional scenes lack depth in parts, her onscreen chemistry with Rao works in favor of the film.
  • Prosenjit Chatterjee, playing the brooding Inspector Das, doesn’t quite get the screen presence his talent deserves. His character’s arc feels underwritten, limiting his impact.
  • Saurabh Shukla is brilliant as always, portraying a power broker with a magnetic presence. His dialogues, delivery, and screen control are masterclass material.
  • Anshumaan Pushkar adds heart to the narrative, playing the conflicted friend whose loyalty is tested. His emotional trajectory is among the most relatable.
  • Swanand Kirkire rounds off the ensemble with a dignified yet gripping presence, making every scene he appears in count.

Direction and Writing: High Ambition, Uneven Execution

Director Pulkit sets up the world of Maalik with great finesse in the first half. Long, deliberate takes, immersive production design, and subtle background score build a strong visual mood. His treatment of action scenes—gritty, not glorified—is refreshing.

Writers Pulkit and Jyotsana Nath show promise in concept, especially with their socio-political layers. However, the second half suffers from length and repetition. Certain subplots—especially that of Prosenjit’s cop and Huma Qureshi’s character—feel underdeveloped or unnecessary.

Technical Aspects: Grit and Grit Again

The cinematography captures the dense atmosphere of the era—grimy streets, political rallies, and blood-soaked back alleys—with a compelling visual palette. The production values remain grounded, lending authenticity to the setting.

The action choreography deserves a special mention—especially one unforgettable scene with Rajkummar Rao dragging four men behind him. It’s brutal, cinematic, and unforgettable.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works:

✔️ Rajkummar Rao’s powerhouse performance
✔️ Realistic action sequences
✔️ Saurabh Shukla and Anshumaan Pushkar’s supporting brilliance
✔️ Raw portrayal of caste, power, and betrayal

Where It Falters:

➖ A bloated second half
➖ Weakly developed subplots
➖ Some characters feel underused (Prosenjit, Huma Qureshi)

Cultural Relevance and Impact

Maalik doesn’t just paint a portrait of crime—it also exposes the invisible shackles of caste and class in 1980s small-town India. It’s a cautionary tale about how power corrupts and how ambition, when unchecked, comes at an emotional cost.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 Stars)

Maalik is a gritty and emotionally resonant gangster film elevated by Rajkummar Rao’s towering performance and Pulkit’s unflinching direction. While it falters in pacing and character depth, its grounded narrative and hard-hitting scenes make it a compelling watch. It may not reinvent the genre, but it certainly leaves a lasting impression.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re drawn to grounded gangster dramas with raw performances and real consequences, Maalik is worth every minute. Come for the action, stay for Rajkummar Rao’s masterclass.
