Soori’s evolution from the industry’s favourite comedian to a bonafide leading man reaches a new high with Mandaadi, director Mathimaran Pugazhendhi’s ambitious sports drama set against the rarely-explored world of traditional sailboat racing. Backed by Vetrimaaran as creative producer and powered by a stellar ensemble cast, Mandaadi blends friendship, betrayal, mentorship and redemption into a rousing, water-soaked commercial entertainer that stands out simply for daring to look different.

Mandaadi is a thoroughly engaging sports drama that scores big on setting, spectacle and heart. Soori delivers one of his most controlled and mature performances yet as Muthukaali, a man running from his past who finds redemption through a sailboat race, while Suhas makes a fierce and memorable Tamil debut as the menacing Saatapuli. Director Mathimaran Pugazhendhi stages the racing sequences with real clarity and excitement, making an unfamiliar sport instantly gripping, and backs it up with a refreshing choice to give the film’s women real agency rather than reducing them to props. Add to that S.R. Kathir’s textured cinematography and G.V. Prakash Kumar’s pulsating score, and Mandaadi emerges as a film that may follow a familiar emotional arc but wraps it in a package fresh enough to be a must-watch this festive season.

Plot Summary

Mandaadi opens with a young Maari (Mithun Jai Sankar) almost taking the lives of antagonist Saatapuli (Suhas) and his son, only for a temple festival commotion to interrupt him. Fleeing to Chennai, Maari finds refuge with Muthukaali (Soori), a theme park worker with a calm exterior hiding a turbulent past. As Saatapuli — an influential figure controlling the local sailboat racing business — hunts Maari down, Muthukaali is forced to return to the village that once haunted him, setting the stage for a story of mentorship, rivalry and a second shot at redemption, all building toward a thrilling sailboat race.

Performances

Soori delivers a career-best turn as Muthukaali, bringing quiet intensity and understated dignity to a man haunted by his past yet driven by righteousness. It’s proof that his transition from comedy to leading roles has been earned through genuine craft.

Suhas, making his Tamil debut, is thoroughly convincing as the greed-driven antagonist Saatapuli. He brings a rugged menace to the role that makes his rivalry with Soori’s character crackle with tension.

Mahima Nambiar makes the most of her screen time, playing a character with real agency who influences the story’s direction rather than staying on the sidelines — a refreshing touch in a male-dominated sports drama.

Sathyaraj brings his trademark gravitas to a well-rounded arc, elevating every scene he appears in despite limited screen time.

Mithun Jai Sankar, fresh off Tourist Family, is a standout as the impulsive young Maari, impressing as both a fiery youngster and an eager mentee under Muthukaali’s wing.

Ravindra Vijay rounds out the ensemble with a nicely layered performance that adds texture to the film’s world of fishermen and racers.

Bala Saravanan, Stun Siva, Achyuth Kumar and Sachana Namidass all contribute memorable support, filling out the coastal community with warmth and authenticity that makes the world of Mandaadi feel lived-in.

Technical Craft

Direction

Mathimaran Pugazhendhi shows real confidence in staging a sport rarely seen on screen, making the rules and stakes of sailboat racing instantly accessible to a lay audience while keeping the emotional core of the story intact.

Cinematography

S.R. Kathir’s camerawork is a major asset, capturing the physicality and tension of the races with striking clarity — the film’s fight sequences, including a memorable sword-and-anchor duel between Soori and Suhas, are wonderfully staged and shot.

Music

G.V. Prakash Kumar’s background score elevates both the emotional beats and the racing sequences, adding urgency and heart to key moments throughout the film.

Editing

Pradeep E. Ragav keeps the pace brisk, especially in the way the narrative moves quickly toward the racing angle without losing sight of its character arcs.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • A fresh, rarely-explored sporting backdrop that gives the film a distinct identity
  • Clearly explained race rules and strategy that make the sport instantly engaging
  • Strong ensemble performances across the board
  • Thoughtful writing that gives women real agency and narrative influence
  • Excellent cinematography and a rousing musical score
  • A well-staged, memorable action set piece involving a sword and an anchor

Weaknesses:

  • The friendship-and-betrayal arc follows a fairly familiar, predictable trajectory
  • The lead characters of Muthukaali and Saatapuli remain somewhat one-note in their broader arcs
  • Some emotional beats echo genre conventions rather than breaking new ground

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ 4.5/5 Stars

Mandaadi may not entirely reinvent the sports drama template, but its unusual setting, rooted performances, and confident handling of its women characters make it a genuinely engaging watch. Soori continues to prove his mettle as a leading man, Suhas announces himself with a striking Tamil debut, and the sailboat race at the film’s heart delivers the thrills it promises. A well-crafted, entertaining ride that earns its place among 2026’s notable sports dramas.
