The 21st edition of the Mumbai Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Race, is set to have a record number of participants with more than 69,000 runners. This includes over 65,400 on-ground participants and 3,700 virtual runners who will hit the streets of Mumbai on January 18. The event boasts a total prize purse of USD 389,524 and will showcase top distance runners from around the world alongside India’s finest athletes.
This year’s marathon will be special as it will incorporate Mumbai’s iconic Coastal Road into the race route for the first time. Along with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, runners can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea and Mumbai’s skyline, enhancing the overall race-day experience. Over the past two decades, the Mumbai Marathon has evolved into one of Asia’s premier distance-running events, contributing significantly to the popularity of running as a mass-participation sport in India.
The event will feature various categories, including 14,059 runners in the full marathon, 16,369 in the half marathon, and 27,453 in the Dream Run, among others. Notably, there has been a rise in women’s participation and an increase in timed runners. To ensure smooth operations on race day, extensive arrangements have been made, with over 3,700 police personnel, 900 security guards, and 7,250 volunteers deployed along the course, including Mumbai dabbawalas and National Cadet Corps cadets.
