A total of 68 candidates, with 28 being women, are set to compete in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections scheduled for April 21. No candidates withdrew their nominations on the final withdrawal day, as confirmed by an official from the Mizoram State Election Commission. The upcoming polls for the 19-member AMC will see voting on April 21 and counting on April 27.
The candidates vying for seats in the civic body comprise 40 men and 28 women, representing four major political parties. The Zoram People’s Movement, Mizo National Front, Indian National Congress, and Bharatiya Janata Party have fielded 19, 19, 19, and 11 candidates respectively. Over 2.37 lakh voters, including about 1.28 lakh women, are eligible to participate across 19 wards in the elections.
In the previous AMC elections held in February 2021, the Mizo National Front secured a majority with 11 seats. The Zoram People’s Movement and Congress won six and two seats respectively. The election process was postponed by the State Election Commission due to administrative reasons, including the state Assembly’s budget session and ongoing state board examinations.
The Model Code of Conduct has been implemented by the State Election Commission, effective since March 18 and continuing until the election process concludes on April 30. The code restricts recruitment or appointment processes in government departments, public sector undertakings, or corporations within the Aizawl Municipality without prior approval. It also prohibits transfers or postings of officials within the municipality during this period.
