As part of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, 70 gardens have been developed in municipal areas across Gujarat, with an additional 61 currently under construction. These initiatives aim to enhance green spaces and upgrade urban infrastructure in the state. The total cost for developing 131 gardens in urban local bodies is estimated at Rs 117.56 crore.
The AMRUT 2.0 project, initiated on October 1, 2021, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focuses on ensuring water security and self-reliance in cities. It involves the revitalization of water bodies, reduction of Non-Revenue Water, and the encouragement of treated wastewater reuse, in addition to the creation of green public areas. In Gujarat, the program emphasizes the renovation of unproductive municipal gardens and the establishment of new parks.
One such example is the Bhavani Garden in Lathi municipality, Amreli district, which has been refurbished at a cost of Rs 1.26 crore, covering an area of 10,936.35 square meters. The garden, previously neglected, has been revived by preserving existing trees, planting native species, and enhancing bird habitats. It now features amenities like an open lawn, children’s play zone, open-air gym, yoga spaces, and a knowledge center, along with a fountain sculpture of white horses.
