A.R. Rahman Launches Bharat Maestro Awards to Honor Indian Classical Music

On January 6, 2025, celebrated composer A.R. Rahman marked his 58th birthday by unveiling the Bharat Maestro Awards, an initiative dedicated to honoring the rich legacy of Indian classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. This endeavor is a collaboration with the KM Music Conservatory, Rahman’s esteemed music institute, which is also celebrating its 16th anniversary this year.

Honoring Tradition and Legacy

The Bharat Maestro Awards aim to recognize exceptional contributions to Indian classical music while emphasizing the traditional Guru-Shishya (teacher-student) relationship. The awards will feature categories such as a Lifetime Achievement Award for a Guru, recognition for exceptional young musicians, and a State Medallion for contributions to music.

Distinguished Mentors and Advisory Board

Renowned figures in Indian music, including legendary vocalist Asha Bhosle, sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, Carnatic singer Bombay Jayashri, and classical vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty, will play pivotal roles in selecting the awardees. The advisory board includes Ila Paliwal, Sai Shravanam, Bharat Bala, and Khatija Rahman, among others.

Award Categories and Benefits

The Bharat Maestro Awards will feature several categories:

  • Stellar Young Musicians: Four awards for young, promising musicians in various disciplines.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award for the Guru: Celebrating extraordinary contributions by a teacher in nurturing future generations.
