AAPI’s Historic Indo-US Scientific Convention on Cardiac Resuscitation in Hyderabad

The first-ever Indo-US Scientific Convention on Cardiac Resuscitation was hosted by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) in Hyderabad, India, on January 18, 2025. This milestone event, held at the prestigious Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), attracted over 350 physician delegates from the US and India. Experts, healthcare leaders, and policymakers gathered to explore urgent issues related to cardiac health, with a particular focus on sudden cardiac death, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Indo-US collaboration on life-saving medical techniques.

Cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death globally, particularly impacts South Asians, who are at a significantly higher risk of heart disease. Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of AAPI, highlighted that South Asians are four times more likely to develop heart disease compared to their Western counterparts, often suffering heart attacks before the age of 50. With this alarming health disparity in mind, the convention aimed to raise awareness about heart disease and promote healthier lifestyles, emphasizing diet, exercise, and stress management.

The event featured global experts sharing critical research and best practices in CPR. Attendees participated in hands-on workshops for both adult and pediatric resuscitation techniques. Keynote speeches were delivered by influential figures, including the Honorable Consul General of the U.S. in Hyderabad, Jennifer Larson, who recognized the vital role of Indian physicians in the American healthcare system.

Collaborating with renowned organizations like the American Heart Association and the Indian Medical Association, AAPI’s convention was a resounding success. The event not only facilitated advanced medical learning but also fostered deeper collaboration between India and the US in the fight against cardiovascular diseases. This was a pivotal moment for medical professionals in both countries to share insights and develop new strategies for improving heart health and reducing mortality rates.

As part of AAPI’s ongoing mission to educate and promote healthcare access, the convention also highlighted the importance of early intervention and community-based CPR training. Attendees left with actionable knowledge and resources to combat heart disease, especially within the South Asian community, where heart disease remains a leading killer.
