Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist, has been awarded the Olympic Order for his exceptional contributions to the Olympic movement. This honor, the highest awarded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for meritorious service, makes Bindra the first Indian to receive this accolade.

The decision was made at the IOC Executive Board meeting in Paris on Saturday. IOC President Thomas Bach informed Bindra of the award in a letter, praising his outstanding services to the Olympic community. The award ceremony is scheduled for August 10 during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, extended his congratulations to Bindra. He highlighted Bindra’s significant impact on Indian sports, inspiring generations of shooters and Olympians. Mandaviya expressed his pride in Bindra’s achievement through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Bindra’s achievement was also celebrated by the IPL team Lucknow SuperGiants. They posted a congratulatory message on X, featuring a photo of Bindra’s historic win in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he secured India’s first individual gold medal.

This recognition cements Bindra’s legacy as a pivotal figure in Indian sports, celebrated for his dedication and contributions to the Olympic movement. The award not only honors his past achievements but also acknowledges his ongoing efforts within the IOC Athletes Commission.
