Afghanistan’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Ataullah Omari has criticized neighboring nations for deporting Afghan refugees, citing violations of humanitarian principles and rights. Over 4.5 million Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan due to the expulsion process initiated by host nations. Concerns arise as Pakistan and Iran continue deportations, raising challenges for Afghanistan’s ability to resettle returnees.
Some Afghan refugees who have been sent back to Afghanistan reported being forcibly deported without the chance to bring their belongings, creating difficulties for their return and reintegration. Afghan refugees in Pakistan have urged both governments to facilitate a gradual and dignified return process through dialogue and adequate time allocation.
Refugee rights activists stress the importance of a voluntary and gradual return process supported by international organizations to prevent a new humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Many Afghan refugees lack proper documentation, leading to uncertainties and deprivation of basic human rights, highlighting the need for a structured and rights-respecting repatriation approach.
