Ahmedabad is making significant progress in managing air quality as it prepares for the Commonwealth Games in 2030. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been implementing a comprehensive clean air and green infrastructure program. The city has seen improvements in monitoring, transport, waste management, and urban greening initiatives.
The AMC has taken a structured and data-driven approach to tackle pollution at its source while promoting sustainable urban growth. Nine pollution hotspots and 16 construction and demolition waste collection centers have been identified for targeted action plans. Measures such as truck-mounted mist machines and mechanical road sweepers have been put in place to control pollution.
Under the National Clean Air Programme, Ahmedabad has deployed 16 mist machines and 62 mechanical road sweepers to reduce road dust and enhance air quality. The construction sector is also under stricter regulations with the implementation of the Good Construction Practices Policy. The policy mandates the installation of dust sensors, air quality display boards, and other measures at construction sites.
In terms of waste management, Ahmedabad has developed 25 collection centers and operates a 1,000-tonne-per-day processing plant for construction waste. The city’s public transport system has transitioned to cleaner energy, with all buses running on clean fuel. Additionally, urban greening efforts have led to the development of gardens and urban forests, increasing the city’s green cover to about 12.5%.
Ahmedabad has utilized a significant portion of the funds received under the National Clean Air Programme for these initiatives. The city is focused on achieving cleaner air and sustainable urban development through effective planning and execution.
