The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is taking action to safeguard its aging sewer network by installing 691 ventilation columns throughout the city. These columns aim to alleviate the strain on the century-old sewage lines caused by hazardous gases like methane and carbon monoxide. By strategically placing these ventilation points, the AMC hopes to release trapped gases at heights, reducing the risk of pipeline damage and road collapses.
Rakesh Bodiwala, Additional City Engineer at AMC, explained that the ventilation columns play a crucial role in preventing gas accumulation within the sewage pipes. Currently, 446 out of the planned 691 columns have been installed and are operational in seven municipal zones. The corporation is working diligently to complete the remaining installations before the monsoon season hits.
The initiative has already demonstrated positive outcomes, according to officials. By implementing these ventilation columns, the AMC anticipates strengthening the city’s sewer infrastructure, minimizing pipeline failures, and averting road damage caused by underground pressure. This project is part of the ongoing efforts to enhance essential civic infrastructure in Ahmedabad.
