Doctors at AIIMS Delhi recently conducted a remarkable surgery, eliminating a massive 19.9 kg tumor from a 43-year-old colon cancer patient named Munmun. Munmun, from Durgapur, West Bengal, had been battling Stage-4 colon cancer with pelvic predominance, facing a grim prognosis of only a few months to live. Despite prior chemotherapy treatments at various hospitals, her condition continued to deteriorate, prompting the need for this complex surgery.
Led by Prof. M.D. Ray, a team of doctors at AIIMS Delhi undertook a challenging cytoreductive surgery on January 12, successfully excising the extensive tumor burden through multi-organ resections. This intricate procedure, which also included HIPEC, marked a significant milestone in Munmun’s treatment journey. Following the surgery, Munmun was transferred from the ICU to the ward and later discharged, showing positive signs of recovery.
Prof. Ray highlighted the complexity of the case, emphasizing that the disease was initially deemed inoperable based on imaging scans that revealed a massive abdominal tumor. The surgical intervention involved a two-stage approach, with the first stage focusing on the removal of the bulk of the tumor mass, requiring the resection of multiple organs. Despite the challenges posed by the patient’s deteriorating condition during the surgery, the medical team successfully completed the procedure.
In the second stage of the surgery, the patient received Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), a specialized treatment involving the direct administration of heated chemotherapy into the abdominal cavity post-tumor removal. This comprehensive approach aimed to eradicate any residual microscopic disease, ensuring a more thorough treatment outcome. The successful completion of the surgery marked a significant milestone in Munmun’s battle against colon cancer, offering hope for a positive recovery and a new lease on life.
