Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has decided to withdraw from its alliance with former Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir for the upcoming Assembly polls in West Bengal. This decision follows the release of a video-cum-audio clip by Trinamool Congress, where Kabir was heard making controversial statements about dividing minority votes to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). AIMIM made the announcement on its official social media handle regarding the alliance termination.
The AIMIM statement emphasized its commitment to providing marginalized communities with an independent political voice through election participation. However, in light of Kabir’s recent statements, the party has chosen to disassociate itself from the alliance. AIMIM clarified that it will now contest the West Bengal Assembly elections independently, without any electoral ties to other political parties.
The social media statement issued by AIMIM highlighted concerns over the vulnerability of Muslims in Bengal, stating that the party cannot align with statements that question the integrity of the community. The decision to withdraw from the alliance was based on the need to uphold the interests of Bengal’s marginalized and neglected Muslim population. AIMIM reiterated its focus on empowering such communities through independent political representation and expressed its intention to proceed with independent electoral campaigns.
Trinamool Congress had accused Kabir of engaging in a deal with the BJP to split minority votes in constituencies where his candidates were contesting alongside AIMIM. Kabir refuted these allegations, labeling the released clip as fake and threatening legal action against Trinamool Congress for what he deemed baseless accusations.
