Multiple reports indicated that Campbell Wilson, the Chief Executive Officer of Air India, has resigned before the completion of his term. The airline has not yet released an official statement regarding this development. Wilson is currently in his notice period as per reports.
It remains uncertain whether Air India has identified a successor for Wilson. The company’s board has been searching for a new CEO since last year to take over from Wilson. The Tata Group, which owns the airline, initiated the quest for a new Chief Executive Officer due to Air India’s challenges post the Ahmedabad plane crash and its slow financial recovery after privatization.
Wilson’s resignation was reportedly approved during a recent board meeting, but he will continue with the company until a replacement is appointed. He assumed the role of CEO and Managing Director of Air India in 2022 under a five-year contract following the airline’s acquisition by the Tata Group. His tenure was originally set to conclude in July 2027.
Before joining Air India, Wilson served as the CEO of Scoot, a low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines. Air India has been facing regulatory scrutiny since the Ahmedabad plane crash last year, alongside operational difficulties due to high fuel costs and aircraft delivery delays.
The leadership transition at Air India comes shortly after its competitor, IndiGo, announced the appointment of William Walsh as the new CEO following the resignation of Pieter Elbers. Walsh is expected to assume office on August 3. InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, appointed Walsh as the Chief Executive Officer after Elbers stepped down in March.
Walsh’s term at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) concludes on July 31, 2026, and he is anticipated to join IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026, as per the airline’s statement.
