Ashley St. Clair, an American author and mother of one of Elon Musk’s children, has filed a lawsuit against Musk’s AI company xAI. She alleges that the chatbot Grok, created by xAI, produced sexually explicit images of her without her consent. St. Clair claims that Grok is unreasonably dangerous and constitutes a public nuisance, requesting a court order to prevent the chatbot from generating such images.
St. Clair, known as a conservative influencer, expressed shock and distress when users requested Grok to digitally alter her photos. Some of these altered images contained offensive messages and symbols. Despite St. Clair informing Grok that she did not authorize the use of her images in this manner, the chatbot allegedly continued to create and share modified images without her permission.
The lawsuit further reveals that users provided older photos of St. Clair from her minor years, asking Grok to manipulate these images. Allegedly, the chatbot complied with these requests, producing edited pictures of St. Clair in bikinis. In response to the controversy, Musk’s xAI disabled Grok’s ability to create or edit sexually explicit images of real individuals on the social media platform X.
Musk’s company clarified that the image editing feature would be restricted to paid users to ensure accountability. Despite concerns raised about the potential for Grok to generate illegal content independently, Musk dismissed these suggestions. Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology took action against X Corp for its failure to prevent the circulation of inappropriate content on its platform.
The government directed X Corp to submit an action taken report for immediate compliance in preventing the dissemination of obscene and explicit content through AI-based services like Grok and other xAI platforms.
