Anuradha Nehru, the esteemed founder and artistic director of Kalanidhi Dance, has been honored with the 2025 Heritage Award by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). This prestigious accolade celebrates her dedication to preserving and promoting the classical Indian dance form of Kuchipudi in the United States.

The MSAC announced the 2025 Heritage Award winners on February 10, 2025, as part of its Maryland Traditions program, which highlights long-term achievements in traditional arts. Established in 2007, the Heritage Awards honor individuals, places, and traditions that have made a significant impact on Maryland’s cultural heritage. Each recipient is awarded a $10,000 grant to support their continued work in the arts.

MSAC Chair Ruby Lopez Harper emphasized the importance of this year’s honorees, stating that they represent the diverse artistic landscape of Maryland, blending local and global traditions. She praised their contributions to keeping cultural heritage alive and thriving.

Anuradha Nehru’s Journey in Kuchipudi

Born with a passion for dance, Anuradha Nehru trained under the legendary Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam at the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai, India. After moving to the United States, she recognized the need to preserve and promote Kuchipudi in North America.

In 1991, she founded Kalanidhi Dance, an institution dedicated to nurturing talent and elevating the profile of classical Indian dance. Over the years, her artistic vision has successfully brought Kuchipudi to the forefront of the Indian-American cultural scene, making it more accessible to broader audiences.

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Recognition

Like many artists striving to establish classical art forms in new environments, Nehru faced significant challenges, including limited funding and a lack of mainstream support. However, her perseverance and innovative approach led to widespread recognition and institutional support.

She has received numerous accolades over the years, including awards from the Governor of Maryland, the Maryland State Arts Council, and various arts foundations. She was also honored with the Pola Nirenska Award for Outstanding Achievements in Dance, recognizing her lasting contribution to the performing arts.

Kalanidhi Dance: A Legacy of Excellence

Under Nehru’s leadership, Kalanidhi Dance has become one of the leading institutions for Kuchipudi in the United States. The company is known for its original choreography, high-caliber performances, and collaborations with artists across different genres.

Some of its most notable productions have blended traditional Indian storytelling with contemporary themes, making Kuchipudi more relatable to modern audiences. Through its performances, Kalanidhi Dance has captivated audiences across the U.S. and beyond.

A New Chapter: Transitioning Leadership

In July 2024, Nehru transitioned to the role of artistic director emerita, entrusting Kalanidhi Dance’s executive leadership to Daniel Phoenix Singh. This strategic move ensures the continued growth and evolution of the organization while staying true to its founding mission.

Nehru’s decision to pass the leadership torch highlights her confidence in the next generation of artists and her commitment to sustaining the legacy of Kuchipudi.

A Lasting Impact on the Arts

The Heritage Award is a well-deserved recognition of Anuradha Nehru’s extraordinary contributions to the arts. Through her work, she has not only preserved the beauty of Kuchipudi but also inspired countless individuals to engage with Indian classical dance.

As she continues her journey, Nehru’s legacy serves as a beacon of inspiration, proving that passion, dedication, and innovation can help traditional art forms flourish across generations.
