In a morning operation on Sunday, Cooch Behar District Police in West Bengal seized a consignment of arms and ammunition at Changrabandha Bypass. This seizure occurred just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled campaign rally in Cooch Behar town.
Authorities intensified Naka-checking activities in the district due to the upcoming assembly elections. During routine checking at Changrabandha Bypass, police recovered four counter-made pistols and two rounds of ammunition from a vehicle. Two individuals, Manirul Islam and Shamim Rahman, were arrested in connection with this incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested individuals were traveling from Siliguri to Dinhata in Cooch Behar district. It is suspected that the weapons were intended to incite fear during the upcoming elections. The police are conducting further investigations into the matter.
In compliance with the Election Commission of India’s instructions, state police are conducting special operations to recover illegal firearms, explosives, liquor, and cash. The West Bengal Assembly elections are scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results to be announced on May 4.
